ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿ (bahuvrīhi — possessive/exocentric compound)

ಅರ್ಥ: ಸಮಾಸ ಸ್ವತಃ ಒಂದು ವಿಶೇಷಣವಾಗಿ, ಸಮಾಸದ ಹೊರಗಿನ ಬೇರೊಂದು ನಾಮಪದವನ್ನು ವಿಶೇಷಿಸುವ ಸಮಾಸ.
Meaning: A compound that functions as an adjective describing something outside itself — "one who/that has X."

ಹೆಸರಿನ ಅರ್ಥವೇ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ: "ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿ" ಎಂದರೆ ಅಕ್ಷರಶಃ "ಬಹಳ ಅಕ್ಕಿಯುಳ್ಳವನು" — ಅಕ್ಕಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಅಂಥ ಅಕ್ಕಿಯುಳ್ಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ. ಒಂದು ಬಗೆಯ ಸಮಾಸ.

The term is self-illustrating: "bahuvrīhi" literally means "having much rice" — not describing the rice, but describing someone who owns it. A type of ಸಮಾಸ.

ಉದಾಹರಣೆ: ಉತ್ಸನ್ನಕುಲಧರ್ಮಾಣಾಂ (1.44) — ಉತ್ಸನ್ನ + ಕುಲಧರ್ಮ — "ಯಾರ ಕುಲಧರ್ಮಗಳು ನಾಶವಾಗಿವೆಯೋ ಅವರ", ಬಹುವ್ರೀಹಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ.
Example: ಉತ್ಸನ್ನಕುಲಧರ್ಮಾಣಾಂ (1.44) — utsanna + kuladharma — "those whose clan-duties have been destroyed," a textbook bahuvrīhi.
