Commentary

This is one of the most debated verses in the Gita — commentators disagree sharply on the meaning of "aparyāptam" and "paryāptam":

  1. Śaṅkarācārya reads "aparyāptam" as "unlimited/immeasurable" (our army, protected by Bhīṣma, is boundless) and "paryāptam" as "limited" (the Pāṇḍava army, protected by Bhīma, is finite) — in this reading, Duryodhana expresses confidence.
  2. Many modern translators read "aparyāptam" as "insufficient/inadequate" and "paryāptam" as "sufficient/adequate" — in this reading, Duryodhana reveals underlying anxiety, since he goes on to ask Bhīṣma for protection.

Both readings remain current; many modern scholars favor the second (Duryodhana's anxiety) as better fitting the context.
